A bow tie story...

There's just something, classy about a bow tie. In all the old photos of Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sachmo I've ever seen, they either look dapper with a perfectly tied bow tie, or slick, kicked back with an untied one hanging around their neck. That, to me, is the allure of the bow tie. It just looks cool at the end of the night, after the party is over. The essential cool!

I've been a fan of the twenties for quite a long while, and last Christmas Jessa surprised me with one of my favorite presents... a handmade, adjustable bow tie. Not that pre-tied faux kind, but the real deal. It was a blue and red plaid. She knows me too well. I love bow ties, bicycles and plaid. Two out of three ain't bad! I've worn it so many times on different occasions that it's hard for me to remember a special time when I haven't had it around my neck. I loved it so much I inquired as to where she got it. She told me a woman in Hawaii (I spent some time in Hawaii and I instantly fell in love with its culture, its food and beyond anything else, it's happy little instrument, the ukulele. I now own three of them. In honor of Laura and her creations I had Jessa help me take some photos for the post, the last photo is for you Laura) made it and that she sells them on Etsy. Her store name is xoelle, and she makes the best bow ties I've ever found. All of her bow ties are made from vintage men's shirts and they're stylish to say the least.

I contacted Laura, the woman behind these little masterpieces, I informed her of how much I love these little spectacular pieces of attire and that I really wanted to do a feature on her store and her creations for the blog. Laura was really into it and sent some pieces from her new fall line. The new line features the old staples and some updated versions with rounded edges. I was racked with anticipation as I waited for the package she had shipped from Hawaii to come. Once it arrived, I opened it like a child on Christmas morning. The new design was marvelous. She had actually taken something classic that's usually reserved for formal affairs and made it hip, modern and even a little casual. That's the kind of innovation that makes "Pearl" and me take notice.

After the first tie arrived, I contacted Laura again and told her how impressive her new line is and I asked if perhaps she wanted to do something a little bigger than just a feature. I really wanted to give her a GQ-esque spread and to do that I would need more of her ties. She agreed and Jessa and I went to work. We decided to give her a three part story. The first would be a teaser of the treats to come, the second would be this, the story, and finally the third part would be a giveaway. That's right, I said a giveaway. Laura was gracious enough to send two extra bow ties; one for me and one for the giveaway. Who said writing a non-profit blog doesn't have its perks!

I know bow ties aren't commonplace for women to wear, but I also know that a good amount of you wonderful women out there have a significant other who you would love to see in a bow tie. According to Jessa, most women would love to see their man in a bow tie. In fact, xoelle even offers a year long bow tie gift set, that way you can look stylish every day.

In a few days, the giveaway will begin!!! The blog is Jessa's baby, my role is usually moral support and photography and occasionally some code issues, but for this feature, it's been my baby. Laura is another one of those wonderful creators and purveyors of elegant handmade objects that swarm the pages of Etsy and I can honestly say, that it has been a pleasure to work with her and to wear her creations. We wish her the best and we hope all of you take some time to view her store and do some shopping!!! Happy Christmas and a very Merry New Year to all of you out there that support us here at Pearl and Earl and all the little wonderful shops, like xoelle, on Etsy!!!
Cheers,
earl

Instagram Weekend No. 6
This past weekend was amazing! On Saturday, we got up early to head down to this amazing place called Almost Home. Almost Home provides housing, food, support, and education to teen moms and their kids. Judd's friend Jason has been volunteering there at Christmastime for years, taking studio quality portraits of the moms and kids. He invited Judd and I and some other local photographers to join him this year, and we jumped at the chance! We had so much fun playing with the little ones and meeting the moms. And the kids really loved having their photos taken- I think we have some future photographers on our hands! The moms we met were inspirational. They possess more strength, courage, and drive than I could ever hope to have, and they're all under 20! Each one of them has a bright future ahead of them.
After wrapping up at Almost Home, we ate some delicious lunch and ice cream, and headed home to meet our friends Camma and Beau, and their baby girl Violet. The five of us piled into Camma's car and drove out to Illinois to see the Christmas light display at Our Lady of the Snows. The light display was kind of disappointing, but we still had a great time, and Camma and I got to ride a camel which was one of the coolest things I've ever done, so that made it way worth it!
We braved the chaos on Sunday and got our Christmas shopping done. I finished up designing our Christmas cards without a moment to spare, and we had a little family photo shoot with our tinsel tree. We're headed to my family's Christmas in Chicago on Saturday and then from there we go to Ohio to see Judd's family for a week! There's lots to do, but I think we're in good shape :)
How was your weekend?

Then we're off to Chicago, followed by Ohio- we'll be posting from the road :) Things are getting hectic around here as we count down to Christmas - how is your holiday prep going?
Happy to be gearing up for a kick-ass holiday!

'Tis the Season for Bow Ties

One of my favorite things about supporting Etsy shops is the personal touch that many shop owners add to their outgoing packages. It makes us warm and fuzzy to see the love that goes into handmade goods, and that little something extra makes us feel so appreciated! Last year, Judd and I did most of our Christmas shopping on Etsy, and although every package that came had some wonderful character, the one that really stood out in my mind was the bow tie I bought Judd from xoelle (pictured above, styled by Judd).
bow ties are the coolest bow ties I have ever seen, hands down. Elle takes vintage shirts and repurposes the fabric to make them. She picks the raddest plaids and patterns. I think she may have even sold her soul to get her mad sewing skills! Each hand crafted tie is an out-of-this-world, one-of-a-kind work of art. But the creativity doesn't stop with the ties! Elle's attention to detail spills out into her packaging, from the custom tags and little notes to the instruction card and hand sewn cereal box envelopes. When Judd's Christmas bow tie came in the mail last year (I had it sent to me at work to be super stealthy), I was blown away. I ran around the office and showed everybody the plaid stunner, the packaging, the works! I knew Judd would go crazy for it, and I even put it back in the envelope before I wrapped it because the detail was too awesome not to share with him. The love that Elle puts into her products made us think the world of her, and now Judd won't wear bow ties from anywhere else!
When we started blogging this summer, we talked about doing features on Etsy shops because we feel so passionately about supporting handmade small businesses. The first name that came to mind was Elle. We are really excited to be able to show off her wares on P+E! Stay tuned for Judd's editorial style post showcasing several bow ties from the new xoelle line, and we will also be hosting a giveaway where you can win a genuine xoelle bow tie of your very own!
Happy Friday!

Holiday Gift Guide: Eco-Enthusiast
Judd and I have a real love for natural products, but find they're a little tricky to locate in our area. It was much easier to get down to basics when we lived in rural Oregon! But thanks to the internet, handmade, beautiful, and eco-friendly gifts are within reach no matter where you live. We came up with this list to help you find the perfect gifts for the eco-coscious boys and girls on your list this year and to support Etsy handmade shops. Here are our tree-huggin' favorites:
1. Up-cycled + personalized Swiss Army wool blanket carry all
2. Custom bamboo + acetate prescription specs
3. Festive bamboo brooch
4. Up-cycled Pendleton wool gift card stocking
5. Hand carved eyelet dreamcatcher plugs with amethyst and citrine
6. Backwoods bar camping soap
7. Green tea + kumquat natural wood wicked soy candle
Doesn't it feel good to be green, to give, and to support small business all at once?
