A bow tie story...

detail+2.png
There's just something, classy about a bow tie. In all the old photos of Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sachmo I've ever seen, they either look dapper with a perfectly tied bow tie, or slick, kicked back with an untied one hanging around their neck. That, to me, is the allure of the bow tie. It just looks cool at the end of the night, after the party is over. The essential cool!

tags.png

I've been a fan of the twenties for quite a long while, and last Christmas Jessa surprised me with one of my favorite presents... a handmade, adjustable bow tie. Not that pre-tied faux kind, but the real deal. It was a blue and red plaid. She knows me too well. I love bow ties, bicycles and plaid. Two out of three ain't bad! I've worn it so many times on different occasions that it's hard for me to remember a special time when I haven't had it around my neck. I loved it so much I inquired as to where she got it. She told me a woman in Hawaii (I spent some time in Hawaii and I instantly fell in love with its culture, its food and beyond anything else, it's happy little instrument, the ukulele. I now own three of them. In honor of Laura and her creations I had Jessa help me take some photos for the post, the last photo is for you Laura) made it and that she sells them on Etsy. Her store name is xoelle, and she makes the best bow ties I've ever found. All of her bow ties are made from vintage men's shirts and they're stylish to say the least.

all+fall+line.png

I contacted Laura,  the woman behind these little masterpieces, I informed her of how much I love these little spectacular pieces of attire and that I really wanted to do a feature on her store and her creations for the blog. Laura was really into it and sent some pieces from her new fall line. The new line features the old staples and some updated versions with rounded edges. I was racked with anticipation as I waited for the package she had shipped from Hawaii to come. Once it arrived, I opened it like a child on Christmas morning. The new design was marvelous. She had actually taken something classic that's usually reserved for formal affairs and made it hip, modern and even a little casual. That's the kind of innovation that makes "Pearl" and me take notice.
detail+1.png\

After the first tie arrived, I contacted Laura again and told her how impressive her new line is and I asked if perhaps she wanted to do something a little bigger than just a feature. I really wanted to give her a GQ-esque spread and to do that I would need more of her ties. She agreed and Jessa and I went to work. We decided to give her a three part story. The first would be a teaser of the treats to come, the second would be this, the story, and finally the third part would be a giveaway. That's right, I said a giveaway. Laura was gracious enough to send two extra bow ties; one for me and one for the giveaway. Who said writing a non-profit blog doesn't have its perks!
9_up.png
I know bow ties aren't commonplace for women to wear, but I also know that a good amount of you wonderful women out there have a significant other who you would love to see in a bow tie. According to Jessa, most women would love to see their man in a bow tie. In fact, xoelle even offers a year long bow tie gift set, that way you can look stylish every day.

In a few days, the giveaway will begin!!!  The blog is Jessa's baby, my role is usually moral support and photography and occasionally some code issues, but for this feature, it's been my baby. Laura is another one of those wonderful creators and purveyors of elegant handmade objects that swarm the pages of Etsy and I can honestly say, that it has been a pleasure to work with her and to wear her creations. We wish her the best and we hope all of you take some time to view her store and do some shopping!!! Happy Christmas and a very Merry New Year to all of you out there that support us here at Pearl and Earl and all the little wonderful shops, like xoelle, on Etsy!!!

Cheers,
earl

'Tis the Season for Bow Ties

One of my favorite things about supporting Etsy shops is the personal touch that many shop owners add to their outgoing packages.  It makes us warm and fuzzy to see the love that goes into handmade goods, and that little something extra makes us feel so appreciated!  Last year, Judd and I did most of our Christmas shopping on Etsy, and although every package that came had some wonderful character, the one that really stood out in my mind was the bow tie I bought Judd from xoelle (pictured above, styled by Judd).

bow ties are the coolest bow ties I have ever seen, hands down.  Elle takes vintage shirts and repurposes the fabric to make them.  She picks the raddest plaids and patterns.  I think she may have even sold her soul to get her mad sewing skills!  Each hand crafted tie is an out-of-this-world, one-of-a-kind work of art.  But the creativity doesn't stop with the ties!  Elle's attention to detail spills out into her packaging, from the custom tags and little notes to the instruction card and hand sewn cereal box envelopes.  When Judd's Christmas bow tie came in the mail last year (I had it sent to me at work to be super stealthy), I was blown away.  I ran around the office and showed everybody the plaid stunner, the packaging, the works!  I knew Judd would go crazy for it, and I even put it back in the envelope before I wrapped it because the detail was too awesome not to share with him. The love that Elle puts into her products made us think the world of her, and now Judd won't wear bow ties from anywhere else!

When we started blogging this summer, we talked about doing features on Etsy shops because we feel so passionately about supporting handmade small businesses.  The first name that came to mind was Elle. We are really excited to be able to show off her wares on P+E!  Stay tuned for Judd's editorial style post showcasing several bow ties from the new xoelle line, and we will also be hosting a giveaway where you can win a genuine xoelle bow tie of your very own!

Happy Friday!

Holiday Gift Guide: Eco-Enthusiast

Judd and I have a real love for natural products, but find they're a little tricky to locate in our area.  It was much easier to get down to basics when we lived in rural Oregon!  But thanks to the internet,  handmade, beautiful, and eco-friendly gifts are within reach no matter where you live.  We came up with this list to help you find the perfect gifts for the eco-coscious boys and girls on your list this year and to support Etsy handmade shops.  Here are our tree-huggin' favorites:

1.  Up-cycled + personalized Swiss Army wool blanket carry all

2.  Custom bamboo + acetate prescription specs

3.  Festive bamboo brooch

4.  Up-cycled Pendleton wool gift card stocking

5.  Hand carved eyelet dreamcatcher plugs with amethyst and citrine

6.  Backwoods bar camping soap

7.  Green tea + kumquat natural wood wicked soy candle

Doesn't it feel good to be green, to give, and to support small business all at once?

Wish List: Under Our Tree

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // // 7

One of my favorite parts of the holidays is decorating the apartment with my honey.  I'm chomping at the bit to assemble and decorate our aluminum Christmas tree [the coolest hand me down ever, thanks to Judd's grandparents!] with our vintage Shiny-Brites.  Making memories with objects that have already seen 50 holiday seasons + have been a part of other people's fondest memories makes me feel all warm and snuggly. Everything has a story to tell, and just like us, each ornament gets the chance to shine another year and hold another memory. This blows my mind.  Once the tree is up, I never want to take it down!

Here's a little photo wish list of items, old and new, that could help make some great Christmas memories :)  [Seriously, everyone needs an Elvis nutcracker - thanks, mom, for getting me one!]

What would you add to the list?

Cheery Christmas Yeti + Krampus: Free Download!

Happy day-before-THANKSGIVING! The weather is chilly, and the 24/7 Christmas radio station is up and running [and I am happy as a clam!].  I can't believe it's the end of November already.

Judd and I would like to say thank you to everyone who's visited our blog over these past 5 months!  You make us feel so loved, and we really appreciate the comments! You give us so many reasons to be thankful ♥

Now that the holiday season is officially underway, I think it's high time to introduce you to two lesser-known characters of Christmas that I've always loved - Mr. Yeti and Mr. Krampus.  I drew them just for you, so if you've been good (or if you're naughty + brave!), please download these desktop and iPhone wallpapers for yourself!

Download Desktop Wallpaper

Download Yeti for iPhone      //       Download Krampus for iPhone
Not familiar with these characters?  Here's a quick breakdown!
The Krampus is THIS guy...

Better steer clear of this one!  Kids in the alps (and in Croatia where my family's from!) are told that the Krampus rides with the big man (St. Nick), punishing the naughty boys and girls with a switch and a rusty chain- ouch!!  If you've been really bad, he will put you in his sack and take you home to munch on for Christmas dinner. Keep your eyes peeled for him on Dec 5th, you never know when he might drop hoof in your neck of the woods!

The Abominable Snowman (Yeti) is THIS guy...

He's a huge snowy ape-like Himalayan creature and he's related to Bigfoot. If you ever hike the mountains of Tibet, be sure to bring a camera (and some jerky too!) just incase you run across this giant.  He looks pretty nice to me, but you never can be too sure (and I hear he's hungry!).

We hope you all have a wonderful and memorable Tofurkey Day with your friends and family!!!  Lots of love!!!

Rain, rain, go away!!  It's dreadfully wet and dreary here in St. Louis.  The weather's not a huge surprise; the Cardinals lost the NLCS last night, so the sky must be crying. On the bright side, I think it's the perfect time to send this cheery little bear out into the universe ♥.  I really hope you enjoy him!!

Dots & Stripes

I've always loved ampersands.  I really don't know why. They're just so unique... alluring... quirky... curvy!  I'm so into the shorthand, there's even an (improper simplification of the) ampersand in our blog title ('cause we're cool like that).  With this pre-existing ampersand love, you can imagine how excited I was when we received this awesome piece of craftsmanship in the mail from Caytlyn and Jordan of Dots & Stripes!

Caytlyn and I started a correspondence a few months ago, and found we have a lot in common.  We both are relatively new bloggers, adore graphic design, and have recently launched small business online with our significant others.  I adore her design work and dig her style, so when she told me she and Jordan were about to drop new line of reclaimed wood signs I freaked!  The quality and personality of this collection is impressive. We love our Dots & Stripes ampersand, and I've already got my eyes on another piece- the "lucky" sign!

Judd and I were super excited to take our Pearl & Earl photo.  And as if we weren't being literal enough, we thought we'd rock the polkadots and stripes to pay homage to our new friends' awesome shop!

Like many handmade start-ups, Dots & Stripes began as a personal project.  Caytlyn asked Jordan to make an "EAT" sign for their kitchen, and that little sign gave way to a business.  Their passion for decorating their home and DIY projects inspired them to branch out and open shop.

With the finesse of a skilled designer, Caytlyn adds her super cute branding in the details.  I love how the hand-stamped accents blend Caytlyn's personal touch with Jordan's skillful woodwork.  Dots + Stripes signs even come with a nail, adhered to the back with super cute washi tape, so they're 100% ready to hang!  Pick any of their designs in a rainbow of colors: Teal (as shown), Yellow, Tangerine, Red, Pink, Natural (wood) and Natural Dark.  You can find them here.

These designs make both fantastic photo props and lovely decorations for your home.  We had so much fun playing with our ampersand until it finally settled on our side table!

Remember, these signs are just the first installment of the Dots & Stripes brand - I can't wait see what else is in store!  Thank you, Caytlyn & Jordan for sharing your awesome collaborations!  We ♥ D&S!

And if you love good design as much as I do, check out Caytlyn's blog, Love Design + Sunshine!  You can keep see some behind the scenes of Dots & Stripes, DIYs, Caytlyn's personal musings, and of course, fantastic graphic design.  I'm a devoted follower :) you should be too!

Ablution 33: Natural Beauty

I've been a natural beauty/bath product convert for a while now.  It freaks me out to know there are so many chemicals and fragrances in the majority of beauty products out there.  But keeping things natural isn't always easy!  I've had a lot of failed attempts to make my own products at home.  There was the incredibly salty tooth powder, and the runny facial cream... need I go on?  The staple in my routine is straight coconut oil as daily moisturizer, and honestly, the #1 reason I use it is because I don't have to go through the trouble of combining it with other ingredients.  I was beginning to think I would be stuck in my minimal, boring routine forever when I was approached by Jess from Ablution 33, whose addicting all-natural products opened my eyes to luxury organic body care!

Jess is a Professional Tattoo Artist, former Licensed Esthetician, and she's also a mom.  She knows how important health and wellness is for her children, so using her background in skincare, Jess created a line of non-toxic and organic products for her family to use.  Lucky for us, she decided to share her incredible creations and recently opened up an Etsy shop!  I'm so excited to introduce you to the amazing organic bath and body products of Ablution 33!

Here's a bit about my favorite Ablution 33 products:

♥  Get Naked is a fabulous moisturizing colorless balm.  It softens the lips and has a subtle sweet flavor.  The consistency is perfect: it's never greasy, and its not a paste either.  LOVE.

♥  Kiss of Death is essentially the same as Get Naked, but tinted.  when applied, it creates a natural transparent stain with build-able color.  It's flattering on all skin tones!  I like to switch to Kiss of Death to dress up my look at night.

♥  Tattoo 2 in 1 does double duty as a sea salt and oil combo. I use it both as my scrub and as bath salts.  It dissolves quickly in the tub and softens the water.  And it smells like licorice. Killer.

♥  I've saved my favorite for last: Lips Like Sugar is the best lip scrub I've ever used, hands down.  To top it off, it has the most intoxicating scent and to die for honey-sugar flavor!  I want to eat it.  If only there was a way to smell through a computer screen...  Just take my word for it, you have to try this!  I forget to drink water and get very dry lips. But now, I could neglect my lips for days and look totally haggard, slather on the scrub, wipe it off, smooth on some Get Naked, and I'm completely rehydrated.  Its magic with a one-two punch!

I can't even begin to tell you what a pleasure it has been trying Jess' products and having our little correspondence.  She is so super sweet!  Her products speak for themselves, but to top it off, she has the most gorgeous packaging.  Thank you, Jess, for being amazing and sharing your incredible creations!  Oh, and I love your name (haha!!)

Now visit Ablution 33 on Etsy and 'clean up your act'!

But wait, there's more!  We're hosting a giveaway from Ablution 33!!  I won't say when, but its coming up very very soon.  We're keeping the prize secret for now, but I will say that Jess wrapped this little gift set up super special, and the products inside are incredible.  You'll just have to wait and see for yourself!

Until then, what's your natural beauty secret?

Jeeze, Julia... You're Amazing!

There are some major perks that come with blogging.  My very favorite?  Making amazing new friends from other parts of the country!  Judd and I have had a correspondence with the sweetest bloggin' gal ever, miss Julia of Jeeze Julia.  I just love her to pieces!  Not only does she write an addicting blog, she also has an eco-friendly Etsy shop that is out of this world.  She repurposes vintage fabrics into ties for men and women, and hankies too.  I adore her lady ties, and Judd is a major supporter of the comeback of the bow-tie, so when she sent us these presents in the mail, we flipped!  In return, we sent Julia a dress from , so watch for it on her blog.

We had so much fun running around South St. Louis taking photos in our sweet new ties ♥.  Check out this handsome guy!

I just love the fabrics she picks out, don't you?  See more of Julia's creations here, and don't forget to visit her blog!  But remember I warned you when you get hooked ♥
